The Framework
The science of connection, applied to where you work

Corporate Attachment® is the practical application of attachment science to leadership, teams, workplace conflict, and organizational performance. It is not a metaphor. It is a rigorously grounded framework rooted in neuroscience, developmental psychology, relationship research, and decades of clinical and organizational practice.

“The issue is rarely a lack of intellect or competence. It is often a lack of relational understanding.”

WHERE IT BEGAN

From the counselling room to the boardroom

Corporate Attachment® did not begin in an organization. It began with a question that refused to go away.
For years, Dr. Abigail Silva worked with couples in distress - using attachment science to help people change the relational patterns that were quietly driving conflict, disconnection, and breakdown. The results were consistent and profound.
But one question persisted: why would these same attachment dynamics simply disappear when people entered the workplace? The answer, on examination, was that they do not. The attachment system - the biological and psychological architecture that governs how humans seek connection, respond to threat, and regulate themselves in relationship to others - remains fully active at work.
That realization, developed over years of organizational consulting and leadership coaching, became the foundation of Corporate Attachment®.
HOW THE FRAMEWORK DEVELOPED

THE CLINICAL FOUNDATION

Couples work and attachment science

Years of clinical practice using attachment-based modalities with couples established the foundational insight: when people change the relational music, they change the dance.

THE ORGANISATIONAL TURN

The same patterns in a different room

As organizational consulting deepened, the same relational dynamics appeared in leaders, teams, and workplace cultures - protest behaviours, avoidance, anxious pursuit, broken trust.

THE PIVOTAL QUESTION

What if this is an attachment problem?

Organizations were diagnosing relational breakdown as communication failure, performance issues, or attitude problems. The real driver - attachment - was invisible, misread, and unaddressed.

FRAMEWORK DEVELOPED

Corporate Attachment® | 2016

After years of application, refinement, and demonstrated results, the framework was formalised and registered - marking the beginning of its systematic application across organizations and sectors.

THE FOUR PILLARS

What Corporate Attachment® holds to be true

These are not theoretical positions. They are conclusions drawn from clinical practice, organizational consulting, neuroscience research, and the repeated experience of watching organizations transform when these principles are applied.
01

Your attachment system does not clock out

We are biological creatures shaped by millions of years of evolution to seek connection and respond to relational threat. That system does not suspend itself when we step into an office, a factory floor, a boardroom, or a healthcare setting. People still need to feel safe. They still respond to exclusion. They still long to be valued, understood, and included. They still experience the pain of broken trust - whether with a partner, a friend or a manager.

The implication: Every workplace is a relational environment first, and an operational environment second.
02

Behaviour is a signal, not the problem

What organizations routinely interpret as resistance, disengagement, attitude, or incompetence is frequently an attachment response - a person reacting from a place of relational threat, not operational failure. Without the Corporate Attachment® lens, leaders misread their people, reach for the wrong interventions, and inadvertently deepen the breakdown they are trying to repair. The behaviour is the symptom. The attachment dynamic is the cause.

The implication: Diagnosis must precede intervention. Treating the symptom without understanding the driver is expensive and temporary.
03

Relational health is the foundation of performance

Healthy relationships are not a soft consideration or a distraction from commercial outcomes. They are frequently what makes those outcomes possible. Trust reduces the friction that slows execution. Psychological safety enables the risk-taking that drives innovation. Connection sustains the conditions under which people give their best. Organizations that invest in systems while neglecting relationships will find their systems underperforming for reasons they cannot easily locate.

The implication: Relational investment is operational investment. The returns are measurable.
04

Identity work is where lasting change begins

Sustainable change does not begin with team dynamics or organizational culture. It begins with the individual. Corporate Attachment® starts by mapping how each person is shaped - how their beliefs formed, how their attachment codes were written, and how those codes influence every professional relationship they inhabit. This self-attunement work transforms leaders from reactive to responsive. It raises the relational competency of every team it touches.

The implication: The first relationship to optimize is the one you have with yourself.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE WORK

The four attachment styles — and what they look like at work

Attachment theory - developed by John Bowlby and expanded by decades of subsequent research - identifies four core attachment styles that shape how individuals relate to others under conditions of stress, uncertainty, and connection. These styles remain active throughout adult life. In the workplace, they manifest in how people lead, follow, collaborate, communicate, and respond to conflict.
These styles are not fixed labels. They are orientations - tendencies that shift under different conditions and that can be worked with once they are understood.
The Corporate Attachment® framework uses this knowledge to help leaders and teams become more attuned, more adaptive, and more effective in relationship to one another.

SECURE

Secure attachment

Securely attached individuals manage emotions with stability and self-awareness. They take healthy relational risks, navigate different styles with ease, and hold steady in conflict rather than escalating or withdrawing. In teams, they act as natural collaborators and conflict diffusers—the visible and invisible stabilizers of group function.

In the workplace: Often the informal anchors of team culture. Their presence raises the psychological safety floor for everyone around them.

ANXIOUS

Anxious attachment

Anxiously attached individuals are acutely sensitive to relational signals and experience strong distress at signs of disconnection. They pursue connection actively—sometimes in ways that read as needy or exhausting—but this is an instinctive response rather than a character flaw.

In the workplace: Highly motivated by approval and recognition. Thrive with clear, consistent communication and regular affirmation of their standing.

AVOIDANT

Avoidant attachment

Avoidantly attached individuals prize autonomy and self-reliance above connection. They withdraw when pursued relationally and interpret close oversight as criticism or inadequacy. Often self-directed high achievers, they can appear as lone operators, independent, sometimes intimidating, and resistant to what they experience as intrusion.

In the workplace: Their independence is an asset when channelled well. Micromanagement is the surest way to lose their engagement entirely.

DISORGANISED

Disorganised attachment

Disorganized attachment typically reflects deep relational trauma, where the source of safety and the source of threat became entangled early in life. In professional settings this manifests as simultaneous longing for and fear of connection, unpredictable relational behaviour, and strong self-protective responses.

In the workplace: Require patient, consistent, non-threatening relational engagement. Often overlooked precisely when they most need support.

THE TOOLS

The Workplace Relationship Agreement

The Workplace Relationship Agreement is the primary tool through which Corporate Attachment® is applied in practice. It is a structured, facilitated process that moves organizations from relational diagnosis to relational repair - creating explicit, shared agreements about how people will work and relate together.

It is particularly effective in conflict mediation, leadership alignment, and team optimization - contexts where the relational breakdown has become explicit enough to demand direct intervention.
1

Individual attachment mapping

Each participant is assessed for their attachment orientation, identifying the relational codes that drive their responses at work. This is not a personality test. It is a working tool.

2

Relational pattern diagnosis

The attachment dynamics between individuals and within the team are mapped — revealing where triggers collide, where trust has fractured, and what the actual drivers of conflict are.

3

Facilitated agreement building

A structured facilitation process creates shared agreements — not imposed rules, but co-created commitments about how this particular group of people will operate in relationship to one another.

4

Embedded practice and follow-through

The agreement is not a document filed away after a workshop. It becomes the operational reference for how the team navigates future conflict, communication, and change.

WHY IT WORKS
Agreements made in the presence of relational understanding hold

Most conflict resolution processes address surface behaviour - the words said, the decisions made, the incidents logged. The Workplace Relationship Agreement operates at a different level. Because it begins with each person's attachment architecture, the agreements that emerge are not generic best-practice commitments. They are tailored to the specific relational landscape of this team, in this organization, at this moment. That specificity is what makes them durable.

SOME APPLICABLE CONTEXTS

  • Leadership team misalignment
  • Entrenched interpersonal conflict
  • Post-restructuring team rebuilding
  • High-turnover culture remediation
  • HR-escalated relational breakdown
  • Onboarding and new team formation

PUT THE FRAME WORK TO WORK
Understanding is the first step. Application is where it changes.

Every Corporate Attachment® engagement begins with your specific context — your people, your patterns, your goals. No two  organizations are the same, and neither are the interventions we design.
